2011 Wine Selection

We are very grateful to Mr Dick Whitaker who has once again recommended and supplied the wine for the Festival. The wine that we are expecting to have at the Festival this year are:

White Wine

Chardonnay Sicilia - 13.0% ABV

This white wine is made from Chardonnay grapes (the grape variety of White Burgundy and Champagne) grown in the Salenta region of Sicily. The wine is straw-yellow in colour with golden reflexes. The bouquet is floral and intense, with hints of honey and tropical fruits; there is a delicate almond aftertaste.

Pinot Grigio/Garganega Delle Venezie - 12.0% ABV

This white wine comes from the North East of Italy and is a blend of Pinot Grigio and Garganega grapes. The Pinot Grigio is now the world's best selling white grape variety; the Garganega (the Grecanico Dorato of Sicily) is the main grape used to make Soave. The wine has a floral bouquet. There is a hint of peaches, almonds and apricots in the taste.

Rose Wine

Pinot Rose - 12.5% ABV

This wine is made from the Pinot Noir grape (the grape used for Red Burgundy and Champagne>. The wine is made in Puglia - the "heel" of Italy". The wine is a light garnet-red colour. There is an intense, fruit packed aroma,of citrus fruits and violets. It is crisp and refreshing, with a clean, fruity finish.

Red Wine

Piemont Barbera - 13.0% ABV

This dry red wine is made entirely from Barbera grapes grown in Piedmont in the North West of Italy, in the regions of Asti, Cuneo and Alessandria. The Barbera is the fourth most planted grape variety in Italy. The wine has a ruby-red colour with purple shades and an intense plum, cherry vinous aroma with hints of blackberry, spice and black pepper. It is medium bodied and well balanced, with high acidity and low tannins.

Sangiovese Toscana - 13.0% ABV

This dry red wine is made entirely from Sangiovese Toscano grapes. Sangiovese is the grape that constitutes 70 per cent of Chianti and is the most planted grape variety in Italy. The name means "Blood of Jove". The wine is deep red in colour with purple shades. It has an intense aroma with hints of violet.
